Abstract
The purposes of this study were to examine the unique effect of self-compassion on binge eating behavior, and to shed light on its mechanism involved. Based on literature review, this study proposed both full and partial mediation models in which body dissatisfaction would play a mediating role in the relation between self-compassion and binge eating behavior. Based on these models and Stice¡¯(2001) dual pathway model, the current study proposed an integrated mediation model in which poor self-compassion would predict binge eating behaviors through body dissatisfaction, which then would be mediated by dietary restraint and negative affect. Structural equation modeling(SEM) approach was conducted to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of three mediation models and simple effects model in a sample of 667 high school students. Results indicate that poor self-compassion was a significant predictor of binge eating behavior, when controlling for body mass index, body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, and negative affect. SEM revealed that both partial and full mediational models fit the data well, and the former was superior to the latter. In contrast, simple effects model was not supported. Further, both the integrated mediation model and Stice¡¯(2001) dual pathway model were not supported. Taken together, these results provide empirical support for the role of self-compassion in predicting binge eating behavior. In addition, they suggest the importance of focusing on self-compassion and body dissatisfaction in preventing or treating this behavior. Finally, implications of these results as well as limitations of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.
